Contrary to the common perception that erstwhile Madras’ first theatre, the Electric Theatre, was established in 1900, the earliest advertisement material available for the theatre, shows that it began its run only in 1913.

Established by Warwick Major and Reginald Eyre, the theatre, however, had only a two-year run, after which it was taken over by the government.

With almost all the old theatres in the city having gone from the city, perhaps the buildings, both that housed Electric Theatre and Mrs Klugg’s bioscope, stand as reminders of the time when the city began its tryst with cinema.
